Wildlife
Goa is a home to varied wildlife sanctuaries. It is a paradise to birds and
animals watchers. Goa Wildlife sanctuaries are an asylum for herds of deer and
giant squirrels, monkeys, cobras and pythons. This vibrant land is gifted with
over 1512 species of plants, 275 kinds of birds, 48 varieties of animals and
more than 60 genera of reptiles. The rich forest of Goa with balance eco-system
supports diverse varieties of flora and fauna. Goa is one of the greatest
reservoirs of biodiversities in India. Some information on wildlife sanctuaries
in Goa are given below:
Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary in Goa
Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary in Goa is situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats. This sanctuary is located near to the Molem village. This sanctuary is a habitat to many rare species of birds, panthers, doles, wild dogs and other carnivores.
Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, Goa
The Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary is positioned 10 km from Chaudi in Goa. In 1969, this wildlife sanctuary was established in the Goa-Karnataka border. Moist-deciduous type of vegetation prevails at the Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary. The fauna found over here includes sloth bears, porcupines, odd gaur, wild boar, panthers and the two species of monkeys.
Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary in Goa
Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary is situated at the foothills of the Western Ghats. It is 10 km from Usgao Tisk village and 52 km from Panaji. The pleasant and the calm eco-system support habitats to many fauna like leopard, gaurs, panthers and deer. This sanctuary is also a home to a large variety of exotic plants.
Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, Goa
The Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary extends to an area of 2sq. km. in the Charoa Island. This sanctuary is rich with mangrove forests and is a home to different species of birds. Also, you can find flying foxes, jackals, crocodiles, turtles etc.
Bhagwan Mahavir Sanctuary in Goa
